Black Bears Play Spoiler In Golden Eagles Inaugural Season
The first game of the XLL’s Fall/Winter season saw the defending champs, The Black Bears, welcome in the newest expansion team, the Golden Eagles.
After a low scoring first quarter that saw the Bears up 2-1, both teams started to settle in and get back to the high flying offense that we got so used to seeing throughout the Summer season.
The Eagles seemed to have a stranglehold on the Bears heading into the fourth quarter with an 8-5 lead thanks to two goal performances, thus far, from Justin Digby and James Rahe. But a strong final frame in net from Brandon Humphrey, as well as a three goal quarter, including the game winner with 44-seconds left in the game by Matt Delmonico paved the way for a massive 11-10 comeback victory for the Black Bears.
Skyhawks’ Offense Goes To Work Against The Wolves
The second game of the night was the first battle of the season between the Red Skyhawks and the Grey Wolves.
The Hawks got off to a hot and fast start with Thomas Semple scoring their first goal just 24-seconds into the game. Semple would finish the night with two more goals, including another one in the first quarter. Between him and Austin Nix, the Hawks found themselves with a 5-0 lead heading into the second.
The script generally remained the same throughout the remainder of the game after that dominant first quarter: the Wolves would generate a bit of momentum towards climbing back into the game, but the Hawks would answer back on the ensuing faceoff thanks to an overwhelming performance on the draws by Gord Phillips who ended the night winning 23 of 25 faceoffs.
The Hawks jumped out to an early lead in this one and never really looked back, cruising to a 16-9 victory.
