Goalies Shine In Round Two Of “All Bird” Matchup

The last time these two teams faced off, it was a thrilling nail biter that came down to the final moments, ultimately leading to a 12-11 victory in favour of the Sky Hawks. This time around, the Golden Eagles had hopes of rewriting that script to maintain their undefeated record in the regular season.

With no Nate Faccin for the Hawks, that meant Guilio Del Bianco would be tasked with shutting the door for the entire game. While the usual dynamic duo of Jeremy Funk and Gordy Bowden would share the net at the other end. Bowden had a particularly impressive effort allowing just four goals on 25-shots through the first two quarters.

The second quarter is where the Hawks started to take control. After a first quarter that saw just one goal scored between the two teams, the boys in red woke up on the offensive side and found a way to solve Bowden for four goals, while continuing to shut the door defensively to hold the Eagles scoreless.

The Eagles found a way to right their wrongs in the third quarter, thanks to a well balanced attack. But they still found themselves down by one heading into the fourth.

After a pair of goals out of the sticks of Austin Nix and Gord Phillips to start the final frame, the Sky Hawks were able to put it in cruise control for the remaining minutes en route to a 12-9 victory against the Golden Eagles.

Ricci Leads Wolves To Victory

It had been three weeks since the Grey Wolves and Black Bears last played - a game that saw the Bears absolutely bury the Wolves 15-3. But a lot of momentum had been building for Team Grey since then, and despite still being the only team remaining without a win, they were determined to use that momentum in their favour.

A quick start would be crucial if the Wolves had hopes of keeping up with the Bears, and Coady Adamson played a major part in exactly that: scoring their first goal on their first possession, just 28-seconds into the game. Vinny Ricci had a primary assist on that first goal, and would add two more helpers in the first quarter alone, giving him points on three of their five goals in the quarter.

But the Bears certainly would not go away. As each quarter passed, the Black Bears found themselves continuing to grind away at every deficit, keeping Wolves to within three by the end of each quarter. John Hofseth and Matt Delmonico both finished the night with five points, while Robert Hofseth and Colton Dow each finished with four.

After back to back goals, in quick succession from the Black Bears to start the fourth quarter, the Wolves found themselves in a situation they’ve been in many times this season: in a painfully close game with 15 minutes to play after leading for the vast majority of it. But thanks to goals from Ricci, Adamson, and Toru Morimatsu, as well as a goal line stand in net by Kyle Mooney, the Grey Wolves were finally able to alter the story line surrounding their season by earning their first win in a 13-12 effort against the Bears.
